Baked Greek salmon ingredients
- Salmon: Ensure even cooking by selecting salmon fillets of uniform size and thickness.
- Olive oil: Drizzle with olive oil for a flavorful base.
- Red onion: Lends a mild sweetness and depth when baked, while still providing a satisfying texture. Shallots make a suitable substitute if preferred.
- Cherry tomatoes: Opt for ripe, sweet cherry tomatoes, such as ‘honey’ cherry tomatoes on the vine, for an irresistible burst of flavor. Grape tomatoes can also be used as a substitute.
- Feta cheese: Elevate your dish with feta cheese, adding a nice tang and some creaminess. The feta doesn’t melt but rather becomes deliciously soft. Choose a block of feta packed in brine for optimal roasting results and superior quality.
- Seasoning: Salt, black pepper, sweet paprika, dried oregano, and garlic powder for a well-rounded flavor profile.
- Chili flakes: For a subtle kick.
- Dill: Fresh dill adds a refreshing burst of flavor, but feel free to swap with parsley or fresh oregano for variation.
- Lemon juice: Finish with a squeeze of fresh lemon juice to brighten the richness of the fish.
How to tell when baked salmon is ready
To check if your salmon is ready, look for the flesh to change from bright pink to a softer, opaque pink color. You can also use a fork to gently pull at the thickest part of the fish—if it easily flakes, it’s ready. If your fillets are really thick and don’t flake easily, just pop them back in the oven for 2 more minutes and check again until they’re just right.
Knowing when your baked salmon is done mainly depends on how thick your salmon fillets are. With this recipe, baking at 400°F/200°C usually takes about 15 minutes. It’s a simple way to cook salmon without worrying about it getting dry or overcooked, especially if you’re new to cooking fish.
Can I make this baked salmon recipe ahead of time?
Absolutely! Whether it’s for a party or just to save time, you can make it a few hours beforehand or even in the morning. Just follow the instructions until step 5. Then, simply cover and store it in the fridge. When you’re ready to eat, take it out of the fridge about 15 minutes before you plan to cook it, during this time you can preheat the oven. Then, follow the rest of the instructions as written.
How to store baked salmon
- After baking, it’s best to enjoy your salmon right away. But if you have leftovers, they can be stored in the fridge for up to 1 day. Simply place them in airtight containers to keep them fresh.
- When reheating, you can use the stovetop. Melt butter and oil over medium-high, then add the salmon fillets. Cook for about 1 minute per side. Next, add the tomatoes, reduce the heat to medium-low, and cook for an additional 3 minutes. Just be careful not to overcook, as salmon can dry out quickly.
- Alternatively, you can enjoy the leftovers cold in a salad or in a sandwich for a tasty lunch option.
