What is Gnocchi
Gnocchi are petite dumplings, typically considered a form of pasta, made from a mixture of mashed potatoes (and occasionally ricotta), flour and eggs. They’re super versatile, suitable for being pan-seared in butter or cooked in various tomato-based or creamy sauces. In this recipe, we combine gnocchi with Italian sausage in a luscious buttery sauce. But you can basically pair them with almost anything. If gnocchi isn’t a regular in your culinary repertoire, it’s an excellent addition to explore!
You can find gnocchi in different forms: frozen, fresh (usually located in the refrigerator section of your grocery store), or dried (available in the pasta aisle).
Ingredients to Make Garlic Butter Gnocchi with Sausage
- Gnocchi: These cook directly in the flavorful pan sauce, no pre-cooking required.
- Italian Sausage: Choose your preferred type, sweet or spicy, for maximum flavor. Alternatively, chicken sausage or ground pork work well as substitutes.
- Garlic: Freshly minced garlic for a burst of flavor.
- White Wine: Use dry white wine such as Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay to deglaze the skillet. If you want to keep it alcohol-free, omit the wine and add more broth.
- Chicken Broth: Opt for low-sodium chicken broth. If using regular broth, adjust salt to taste before serving. Vegetable broth is also an option.
- Lemon Juice: Adds a zesty kick to enhance the dish’s flavors.
- Unsalted Butter and Olive Oil: Used for searing the sausage and creating the buttery sauce.
- Seasoning: A simple blend of salt, black pepper, and Italian seasoning complements the Italian sausage flavors.
- Herbs: Freshly chopped parsley.
Helpful Tips
- Add your favorite vegetables such as spinach, broccoli rabe, green peas, bell pepper, kale, or mushrooms to customize the dish to your liking.
- For a vegetarian version, simply exclude the sausage.
- Experiment with different meats by substituting Italian sausage with chicken or pork sausage, ground pork, turkey or bacon.
- Consider serving the gnocchi alongside a simple side salad drizzled with balsamic vinegar for a refreshing accompaniment.
Storage
- Fridge: Keep leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat in a microwave or in a saucepan over medium until steaming.
- Freezer: Gnocchi can be stored in the freezer for up to 3 months.
