What is Boursin cheese?

Boursin cheese is a soft, mild and light cheese infused with garlic and herbs. It has a slightly salty flavor with a tangy kick, similar to cream cheese, but with a more pronounced herby taste.

While it has a similar texture to cream cheese, it differs in its composition. Cream cheese is made from a mix of cream and milk, whereas Boursin is typically made from cream, garlic, herbs and other flavorings.

Its texture and flavor makes it a great choice for jazzing up soups, sauces, dips and spreads.

Easy ingredients

  • Boursin cheese: For this recipe, we’ll be using two varieties of Boursin: Garlic & Chives, and Black Pepper. This combination adds plenty of flavor and pairs perfectly with the sweet cranberry sauce.
  • Cranberry sauce: Use whole berry cranberry sauce for the best texture and flavor.
  • Sour cream: Helps thin out the cream cheese slightly, making it easier to whip while still keeping the dip light and fluffy.
  • Flavor enhancers: Dried thyme, freshly ground black pepper, chili flakes and chives will elevate this dip with a burst of flavor.

Recipe tips

  • Add a Crunch: For extra texture, top with toasted pecans or pistachios.
  • Herb Variations: Try adding more holiday herbs like rosemary for a festive twist.
  • Make Extra: You can easily double or triple the recipe to serve a larger crowd. This is one of those appetizers you’ll hope to have leftovers of, as it makes a delicious spread the next day.
  • Room Temperature: Let the cheese and sour cream sit out at room temperature. Using ingredients at room temperature makes the dip easier to whip up and spread.
  • Serve with: Crostini, toasted sourdough bread, crackers, puff pastry, bagel chips, toasted pita bread or veggies.

Can I use other cream cheese than Boursin?

Yes! You can use any cream cheese you find at your store. If it’s not flavored, simply add 1/2 teaspoon of garlic powder, freshly ground black pepper, and chives to the whipped mixture to bring in that extra flavor. You might also need to add a pinch of salt.

For a dairy-free option, feel free to substitute for a dairy-free cream cheese, your dip will still be delicious!

Storing tips

To store leftover whipped Boursin, cover it with plastic wrap or transfer it to an airtight container, you can keep it in the fridge for up to 3 days.

Make ahead

If you’re making it ahead, you can whip the Boursin cheese up to 2 days in advance. Just cover it and store it in the fridge. When ready to serve, top with the cranberry sauce.

I’m having a hard time finding the Boursin with black pepper any suggestions for an alternative?

I can’t fine Boursin cheese in the size of 2.8 oz. I can only find in 5.3 oz. size. Is it really 2.8 oz? Thank you

    1. Hi Duree! Good catch. I’ve updated the recipe to reflect the standard 5.3 oz size most people find in stores. Thank you for noticing! Happy cooking!

What do you think about the Boursin Black garlic and Rosemary to replace the Boursin Black Pepper? I want to make this tonight for a work lunch. Thank you,

        1. Great combo! Go for it!!

  3. Hi! I only have a blender or immersion blender- no food processor. Can I pulse the ingredients in blender?

    1. Hi Meg! Yes, a blender or immersion blender will work just fine. Just blend in short pulses so it doesn’t turn overly thin, and stop once it’s creamy and fluffy. If you’re using an immersion blender, mix everything in a deeper bowl to keep it smooth. Enjoy! 🥰
